Martin studied law at Trinity College Cambridge and obtained his law degree in 1975. After further law examinations and legal training, he qualified as a solicitor in 1978. He worked for a large City of London legal practice until he joined Dawson Cornwell in 1992. He became a partner in 1993.
Martin is head of the Trust and Probate Department. He combines a good working knowledge of personal taxation with his wide experience in dealing with wills and estates, trusts and charities. Increasingly he gives advice in these areas of law where there is an international aspect. He also advises in connection with disputes over wills, estates and trusts.
He is a member of the Law Society, the Probate Section of the Law Society, the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners, the Charity Law Association and the Association of Contentious Trust and Probate Specialists. He holds financial planning certificates 1, 2 and 3 of the Chartered Insurance Institute.
Martin is a director of Centre 70 Advice Centre which is one of the main providers of free legal advice in south London. He has provided voluntary help and free legal advice with Centre 70 since the late 1970s. Martin is a member of the Solicitors Pro Bono Group.
